During the gold rush in the 1890's a number of towns were established in the Goldfields. These towns boomed with gold miners. Many towns had at least 5 hotels, a number of pubs, and shops.
Coolgardie is a famed gold-mining town of yesteryear, located in the heart of Australia’s Golden Outback. This destination is rich in history and arguable on of the most significant destinations in Western Australia. Coolgardie is one of the most famed ghost towns in Australia, and in the world. The discovery of gold in 1982 transformed Coolgardie into a bustling Mecca of hope and prosperity. However, in 1985 the gold rush ended abruptly, as did Coolgardie’s population boom; reverting Coolgardie to a ghost town once more. Today, whilst visitors stand in the towns narrow streets they can often feel the eerie presence of history and catch a glimpse of life so many years ago.
Kalgoorlie is one of the few towns that survived when the gold miners left and is a great place to start off from to explore the ghost towns.
Ghost towns like Ora Banda, Broad Arrow and Kookynie are literally skeletons of their former glory days. Explore the remains of empty buildings and the few that still operate businesses.
