Newman
The town of Newman was established by Mt. Newman Mining Co. Pty Ltd (a subsidiary of BHP) in 1968, however, Aboriginal occupation of this area extends to around 26 000 years.
Newman was built to house employees for the iron-ore mines. Still boasting a big iron-ore industry, Newman is home to over 7,000 people. Newman is located 1,184km north of Perth.
Newman is a large and somewhat modern mining town in the Pilbara region. It serves several iron ore mines. Visitors can arrange to inspect the mine by contacting the Newman Visitor Centre, but to view the countryside it is best to use Radio Hill Lookout which will display the production area of Mt Whaleback Mine site and give an overall perspective of its size. Newman mining and pastoral museum is located at the Newman Visitor Centre and gives a brief history of the town and the establishment.
